When Generosity Becomes Joy

Generosity often begins with obedience. We give because God has called us to be faithful stewards and to hold what He has entrusted to us with open hands. But something beautiful often happens along the way – obedience begins to become delight. Jesus said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ – Acts 20:35. That blessing is the deep joy that comes when we see the resources He has entrusted us with become an instrument of God’s goodness.

Generosity allows us to participate in something bigger than ourselves. We get to see a need in our community met, a person in our lives encouraged, a ministry strengthened, or a Kingdom opportunity advanced. And when we recognize God’s hand in those moments, generosity becomes a source of joy. The joy isn't why we give. We don't give to feel good. But as we give, God often gives something unexpected in return: the freedom of open hands, the satisfaction of being useful in His purposes, and the joy of witnessing His work through our lives. I so appreciate when ministries I have given to report of lives transformed, new frontiers reached, and projects completed.  With each of these, I take joy in being a small part of that work.

Where have you recently experienced joy because of something you gave – your money, time, encouragement, or attention? Take a few minutes to celebrate what God has done through your generosity. Thank Him for allowing you to participate in His work. Take joy!

Then ask: Where might God be inviting me to move from simply obeying Him in generosity to actually delighting in giving? Look for one opportunity this week to give freely and pay attention to the joy that follows.
