Seeing Needs Through God’s Eyes
Last month in our annual series, Growing in Generosity, we reflected on the truth that ‘some of the most meaningful expressions of generosity cost us nothing financially – time and attention.’ We continue that journey by focusing on compassion, because generosity begins with seeing.
Compassion is central to a generous life. It begins with awareness, grows through empathy, and moves us toward people in need rather than past them. A compassionate heart is often the first evidence of a growing generous spirit. In Matthew 9:36, Jesus looked upon the crowds and ‘had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.’ Jesus noticed people deeply and responded with love. His generosity flowed from a heart fully attentive to the needs around Him.
In a world flooded with information and constant distraction, it is easy to become numb to suffering. Growing in generosity means asking God to open our eyes – to the coworker carrying hidden burdens, the neighbor battling loneliness, the missionary serving faithfully in hardship, or the family quietly struggling to make ends meet. Compassion is more than emotion. It is love that notices, love that moves closer, and love that reflects the heart of Christ.
As we continue growing in generosity, perhaps the next step is not doing more, but seeing more clearly. Ask the Lord today: Who around me needs encouragement, care, or support? How can I use my time, attention, influence, or resources this week to reflect the compassion of Christ? When we learn to see as Jesus sees, generosity naturally follo ws.
