A Life with Space to Give
As we continue Growing in Generosity, we move from gratitude into margin. If gratitude helps us recognize how much we’ve received, margin determines how freely we can respond.
Generosity does not happen by accident. It requires space – financially, emotionally, and relationally. Without margin, even the desire to be generous can feel constrained by full schedules, tight budgets, and competing priorities.
Scripture reminds us, ’There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.’ Ecclesiastes 3:1
Wisdom recognizes limits. We are not designed to do everything, have everything, or respond to every opportunity. Margin is created when we accept those limits and order our lives accordingly.
The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10 offers a helpful picture. Martha was busy and distracted by many responsibilities, while Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet. Martha’s activity was not wrong - but it left little space for what mattered most. Similarly, full lives can crowd out generous lives.
Margin requires intentional choices. It may involve spending less than we could, leaving some additional free space in our schedules, or resisting the pressure to constantly upgrade or expand. These are not decisions of restriction – they are decisions of alignment.
Examples: When financial margin exists, generosity becomes possible without anxiety. When relational margin exists, we have time to notice and respond to others. When emotional margin exists, we are more attentive, patient, and present.
Margin creates readiness. In everyday life, this might look like maintaining a giving line in your budget, leaving space in your calendar for unplanned needs, or simply slowing down enough to recognize an opportunity to serve. These practices are quiet, but they are formative.
As you reflect this month, ask – Where is your life currently full? What is one area where creating margin could allow generosity to grow?
As gratitude leads to awareness, margin leads to action. It creates space for generosity to breathe – and to become a natural rhythm of life.
