Gratitude Changes How We See

As we continue Growing in Generosity, we move from contentment into an attitude that deepens it: gratitude. If contentment clarifies what is enough, gratitude helps us recognize how much we have already received. If we stop and look closely at our lives, we all have much to be grateful for.

Scripture reminds us, ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above.’ – James 1:17  Gratitude begins with awareness – the intentional practice of noticing what we might otherwise overlook: God’s provision,  vital relationships, and daily rhythms we often take for granted.

In Luke 17:17, Jesus heals ten men with leprosy. All ten are restored, yet only one returns to give thanks. The difference was not in what they received, but in what they recognized.

Gratitude turns God’s provision into worship. Without it, we tend to move quickly past what we’ve been given, always looking ahead. Gratitude invites us to pause, remember, and acknowledge God as the source. This posture reshapes generosity. When we recognize how much we’ve received, generosity becomes less about calculation and more about response.

In everyday life, gratitude can be simple and intentional – pausing to reflect on daily gifts, expressing appreciation to others, or remembering God’s faithfulness over time. These practices train the heart to see clearly. And when we see clearly, we give more freely.

As you reflect this month: What gifts have you recently overlooked? How might you practice gratitude more intentionally? As gratitude grows, generosity becomes a natural response to God’s goodness.
